Maternal occupational exposure and risk of specific birth defects.

چکیده
BACKGROUND Gregg identified the teratogenic effect of maternal rubella infection in 1941 and since then there has been a focus on risk factors for birth defects. In nearly 70% of all birth defects, there is still no known risk factor and close to 30% of all pregnancies end in a foetal loss or spontaneous abortion, often because of a defect in the foetus. A large percentage of the workforce consists of women of reproductive age. METHODS A search in MEDLINE for original literature and examination of the association between exposure during pregnancy and the risk of birth defects. RESULTS Five specific birth defects were identified: neural tube defects, cleft lip and cleft palate, congenital heart defects, urinary tract defects and limb defects. The next step was to include studies with information on occupational exposure during pregnancy. CONCLUSION There seems to be growing concern as to whether organic solvents, including glycol ethers, pesticides and heavy metals may play a teratogenic role. There is no convincing evidence linking occupational exposure during pregnancy and birth defects.

Introduction: Recognition of maternal exposure to solvents and its relationship with congenital heart defects in infants can be effective in identifying effective environmental factors in the occurrence of anomalies. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between maternal occupational exposure to solvent and birth congenital heart defects in infants. Method: In this case contr...
متن کاملEffects of occupational exposure on the reproductive system: core evidence and practical implications.
With the increasing labour force participation among women in Western countries, many women will work during their reproductive years. This will increase the likelihood that women during pregnancy will be exposed to a variety of chemical, physical and psychosocial factors at work. The presence of hazardous conditions in workplaces has raised concerns about their potential effects on pregnancy o...
متن کاملSelected environmental exposures and risk of neural tube defects
With a birth prevalence of 1 in 1000, neural tube defects (NTD)s contribute considerably to morbidity and healthcare costs. Known genetic and environmental (noninherited) risk factors for NTDs account for a small portion of risk, suggesting unidentified risk factors. In animal studies, maternal alcohol and pesticide exposures, independently, led to excess neural cell death, resulting in too few...

Background and aims: Currently, as a result of research on laboratory animals, abundant information has been obtained on the impact of various environmental factors on the occurrence of congenital malformations, but there is still no comprehensive information on the causes of congenital heart malformations (CHD) in human populations. Congenital heart defects (CHDs) constitute the major class of...
